Montenegro is, in many ways, an interesting and unique part of the world. For centuries, it has existed as a state in the turbulent region of the Balkan Peninsula. Geographically, it is a land of incredible contrasts. Only 190 kilometres of air distance connect the two most distant points, while in-between it seems as the North Pole and the Equator have met. That\u2019s why Montenegro is at once a coastal, continental, and mountainous country. It has 40 lakes, and its rivers remain among the cleanest in Europe.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Nearly 80% of Montenegro’s territory is covered by forests, pastures, and meadows. There are 2,883 plant species and subspecies growing here i.e. on only 0.14% of the continent\u2019s area, which is the size of Montenegro, nearly a quarter of Europe\u2019s plant life is represented. Five national parks and numerous legally protected natural areas cover one-third of Montenegro and protect its exceptionally rich and diverse flora and fauna, including some species, which can only be found here. Montenegro is a land of natural rarities. It is a home to one of the only two remaining European primeval forests, the southernmost fjord in Europe<\/em>, the largest lake in the Balkans, the river with the deepest canyon in Europe and the second deepest in the world.<\/p>\n
